Domain Age is IMPORTANT

Met with an Austin attorney yesterday who began working with a marketing company about a month ago. This attorney has a very basic website that's been 'live' for about 3 years. This marketing company developed a new website but did not use the domain name that's been around for 3 years. So, he now has a brand new website on a brand new domain name. I broke the news to him that his new site likely won't be ranked by Google for about 6-9 months.

Do not let marketing companies develop a website on a brand new domain name if at all possible. I understand if you are developing a website for a completely new practice area, but in most cases try to do a 301 redirect so Google will still give you domain age 'credit' going forward with the new site. Domain age is a major criteria Google uses to determine rank.
